Chetumal is the capital of Quintana Roo state and while it's less well known as a tourist destination than Cancún or Playa del Carmen, it has a lot to offer including Mayan sites and while it's more of a port town than a beach destination there lovely beaches in the area. It is also the jumping off point for trips to Belize or Guatemala. There is also a significant LGBT community and several nightlife options.
There is an Annual gay pride parade at the beginning of July.
