The cities with the greatest population in Mexico State are actually in the sprawling area just to the north of Mexico City. They are in Mexico State but are effectively part of the Mexico City metropolitan area with many people communiting to work in the capital.
The cities include Ecatepec de Morelos (which has a larger population than the state capital Toluca), Atizapán, Coacalco, Cuautitlán & Cuautitlán Izcalli, Tlalnepantla de Baz, Tultepec, Naucalpan de Juárez and Huehuetoca.
